Types of water damage and what to do for each
Rain/Ice
There are lots of ways for rain or ice to cause damage to your home. While roof leaks might be the first to mind and are the most common, improper yard or flower bed drainage is also very common. These issues can cause thousands of dollars in damage, sometimes before you are even aware of it! It is important to check your home frequently for signs of water damage, past or present, to ensure the elements are not accessing your home. If water is getting into the roof or walls, a tarp is likely needed to allow proper drainage and prevent further damage. If water is flooding in from the ground level of the home, try placing sandbags in a protective barrier around the walls that are flooding. If you discover water damage to your home, call us immediately to avoid worsening problems.
Leaking Pipes
Just a drop in the bucket, as the saying goes. But what if you don’t have a bucket and the drops are running onto the floor? Leaking pipes are the quiet killer of the water damage world, often going unnoticed until they have caused some form of significant damage over a long period of time. Broken water heaters and leaking garbage disposals are the main culprits here. Similar to a broken pipe, first look for a shutoff valve behind the water source in the supply line. If you can not find one, the water will need to be turned off to the house. This is done at the city main, usually near the street but sometimes near the front of the house. It is important to know where your home’s water shut off is located, so you can quickly find and access it in an emergency. If you can not find the water main, call us for assistance and then immediately call a plumber. If you discover water damage has occurred in your home, call us immediately to avoid worsening problems.
Broken Pipes
Broken pipes can be caused by a multitude of issues, ranging from freezing to improper installation to improper demolition. No matter how a pipe gets broken, things can get catastrophic fast. If a pipe gets broken in your home, the first thing you need to do is to shut the water off to the house. First, look for a shutoff valve behind the water source in the supply line.
Overflowing Toilet
Yep, spared you the picture on that one. Overflowing toilets are one of the grossest, but most common, types of residential flood. If this happens to you and your home, don’t panic. Start by turning off the water supply line, located behind the toilet. If water continues to flow, you will need to turn off the water to the house. This is done at the city main, usually near the street but sometimes near the front of the house. It is important to know where your home’s water shut off is located, so you can quickly find and access it in an emergency. If you can not find the water main, call us for assistance and then immediately call a plumber. Do not try to remove the water, as it could have harmful bacteria in it and attempting to move it could cause further damage to your home. Instead, call us at Caring Carpet Care to practice a safe extraction where we will also apply antimicrobial agents and ensure that proper IICRC methods are followed for a clean restoration experience.
Wet Carpet/Padding
If a flood or water damage results in wet carpet and padding in your home, regardless of the source of the flood, the carpet padding will need to be removed and replaced. Depending on the source of the water and the time and distance traveled, there are different classifications of flood which will dictate whether the carpet can be cleaned or must also be replaced. If you have water in your home and it has made its way to your carpet, call us right away to prevent as much damage as possible. In scenarios where the carpet can be cleaned and relayed, we are able to assist with every step of the process including reinstall.
Wet Hardwood
If a flood or water damage results in your hardwood floor getting wet, the first thing to know is that time is of the absolute essence. Flooded hardwoods have an exponential rate of absorption, meaning they will absorb more water more quickly if left untreated. After addressing the water source and ensuring there is no additional water, begin removing the water from the hardwood by any means necessary. Wet/dry vacuums work great, but in more severe situations a towel wrapped around a broom can be used to “sweep” water to the nearest door or drain. Hardwoods that absorb too much water and are not dried quickly enough will exhibit many different signs of water damage, including “peaking” at the joints and splitting or warping of the boards. Don’t let this be your hardwood floors, if a flood happens call us right away so we can begin remediation immediately.
